Fitch Pond Floodplain

The Fitch Pond Floodplain is a 30 acre gift granted to the

Trust in 2003 by Gary Griffin as trustee of the Great Pond

Realty Trust. It is a fee (outright transfer of full ownership)

transaction above and beyond the conservation

restrictions granted in association with the developed lots

on Fitch Pond Way. This tract consists of an abutting 30

acres of open meadow wetland and red maple swamp.

This generous gift permanently protects approximately half

of Sterling’s largest wetland environment totaling 100

acres. The conserved land is open to the public but is best

visited during the winter when the swamp is safely frozen

and its wondrous world of cattails and tree snags can be

best appreciated.
